The kids are out for Summer break and the weather is HOT!

If you’re like most of us you’re looking forward to summer adventures and time with your family BUT also feel exhausted just thinking about it!

Top 4 Health Tips Every Mom Needs to Thrive Over Summer Break

1. Sleep - this is one of the biggest areas that suffers during Summer. We tend to burn the candle at both ends, staying up late and getting up early. It’s the pattern of the season but doesn’t have to be so extreme! 

Sleep is so important for our overall health and energy. I once had a patient who was describing how tired he was, how he would even fall asleep in the car! Well, after some digging, it turns out that he has only gotten 4 hours of sleep a night for the past 15 years! Humans need 7-9 hours of sleep. Period. There is less than 3% of the total population who needs less than that, so likely you’re not one of them!

Make it your goal to be in bed by 10pm to make sure you give yourself enough time for the restorative sleep your body needs.

2. Hydration - It’s hot here in the columbia gorge where I live. Be sure you’re hydrating. Baseline water needs are about 1/2 your body weight in ounces. Add in extra if you’re sweating from the heat or from exercise!

3. Meals - With the kids out for the summer you might be feeling the pressure of extra meals at home. Be sure you’re getting in that good nutrition for yourself too! Try adding in a smoothie for a snack, or a massaged kale salad for lunch or dinner. Think fresh and raw during the summer. Take advantage of the freshness of the season and eat local!

4. Exercise - Want a toned and strong body? Adding in strength training is key! Aim for 2-3 days a week where you’re lifting weights, wine bottles, water jugs, babies, logs, whatever you can find!
